Science Fair Project with Lego Models


Science Fair Question/Purpose:  

How do aerodynamics effect the speed and velocity of a car?


Round and smooth edges will be the best aerodynamic choice and will make for a smoother, faster ride. 


Constructed a base car (Car: A) to race in a timed race from point A to point B and kept record of the time. 

Next, modified Car A into Car B by adding in an upper-slant to the back end of the vehicle and timed the race again from point A to point B.

Then, modified the car again to make Car C by adding a two-way-slant engine to the middle of the vehicle. Raced that car from point A to point B, timed and tracked with notes. 

Finally, modified the car into Car D by adding a front smooth bumper. Raced this vehicle from point A to point B, timed and tracked with notes.

Automotive Aerodynamics by Definition:

Automotive aerodynamics is the study of the aerodynamics of road vehicles. Its main goals are reducing drag and wind noise, minimizing noise emission, and preventing undesired liftforces and other causes of aerodynamic instability at high speeds. For some classes of racing vehicles, it may also be important to produce downforce to improve traction and thus cornering abilities. 


Car A was the base car and time for the test. Car B proved to be faster with its adjustments. While Car D proved to be the slowest with its adjustments due to its size and weight of the vehicle. Car C was the fastest from point A to point B by size, weight, and speed. Car C had perfect balance of smooth edges and weight to win the race.
